Al Ahly defeated Al Mokawloon Al Arab 2-1 on Tuesday at Al Ahly Stadium in the Egyptian League.
The Red Eagles reached 44 points at the top of the table and we are five points clear with two games in hand.
First Half
It is now obvious that Marcel Koller's men are always trying to have an early lead in the game to make the game easier.
We had a strong start to the match and Taher Mohamed Taher was fouled inside the box and the referee awarded us a penalty.
Ali Maaloul stepped up to take the penalty and scored the opening goal for our team.
The minutes followed were played almost exclusively in Al Mokawloon's half as our players were hoping to double their lead.
At the halfway of the first half, we managed to achieve what we wanted as Mohamed Hany doubled the score.
Our right back received the ball and sprinted down the right flank, sending a cross that was deflected by Farouck Noureldin into his own goal.
Percy Tau had a chance to add another goal after dribbling Al Mokawloon's defender and sent a strong shot but was saved by our former goalkeeper Mahmoud Aboelsoud.
The visitors gradually grew into the game and started creating some dangerous chances.
Al Mokawloon managed to close the gap before half time with a beautiful header from John Okoli.
Second Half
The second half started with a substitution as Aliou Dieng joined the game to replace Marwan Attia.
We were trying to have more control over the midfield to avoid any surprises from the visitors.
We couldn't create great opportunities like we had in the first half but we kept pushing for the third goal to secure the three points.
After 15 minutes from the interval, Al Mokawloon were the better side and kept our midfielders under pressure to get the ball and go for counter-attacks as they needed a goal to get back on level terms.
Koller made two more changes when Mohamed Magdy Afsha and Raafat Khalil replaced Ahmed Kendouci and Shady Hussein.
El Shenawy was needed to stop a strong shot from Okoli and was needed again to save Mamadou Niass' effort.
Koller turned to his bench again as Mohamed Ashraf and Ramy Rabia entered the pitch in the last minutes of the game that didn't witness any change in the score.
Our team secured an important win ahead of their trip to South Africa to face Mamelodi Sundowns in the CAF Champions League.
